Mussels - as an appetizer or your main meal
Although not as popular as the clam, the mussel is a delicious
and diversely prepared food. With its salty, sea air taste, the
mussel has been appreciated for centuries by a number of different
cultures.
The preparation of mussels before eating
them alone or adding them to a delicious recipe is really quite
simple. First, if the shell of the mussel is open, discard it immediately.
The mussel is dead and should not be consumed. Mussels should be
washed with a scrubber under running water, then soak in salt to
remove the sand and can sometimes be fed flour as it will help to
fatten and remove them.
Mussels are served in a variety of ways. Mussels are most commonly
steamed or grilled and then added to any number of delightful recipes.
One might wish to serve mussels in a wine, garlic and butter sauce
while another individual may choose to add mussels to a heavier
cream sauce to serve over pasta. Mussels have been said to even
be fried and pickled.
Even the most novice of chefs can make an incredible and appreciated
dish with mussels. Mussels are diverse enough to be included in
several courses of any meal. As an appetizer, part of the main meal,
or even presented as a gift, mussels are a unique and tasty presentation.
